Kolkata: A 42-year-old man residing at Phoolbagan claimed that he was assaulted in a road rage incident involving at least a dozen youths. The incident was reported last Sunday around 5 pm when the victim was driving back to his residence located on Narkeldanga Main Road. The Phoolbagan police registered a case and questioned a few persons.
According to the victim, Punendu Sekhar Banerjee, he was near Rani Sati Mandir and was taking a turn when two scooties came face to face with him. Each had three riders. There was a moment when it looked like there could be a collision due to the manner in which the two-wheelers were being ridden. Banerjee alleged that though he managed to make his way, the scooterists abused him. "I ignored them and drove on. But I could not escape their wrath. They chased me till Byam Samiti Club on Narkeldanga Main Road where 12-15 men – comprising scooterists, rickshaw pullers, and auto drivers – assaulted me with their fists and their cricket bats and wickets. My car too was extensively damaged," Banerjee said in his complaint letter.
"The case was recorded based on Banerjee's letter of complaint where he alleged that between 5 pm and 5.15 pm on Sunday, the FIR named 10-15 accused persons - including the gang leader, later identified as Manjar, and in furtherance to their common intention while riding two scooties - wrongfully restrained the complainant's car near Bayam Samity Club Ground. All the accused persons then physically assaulted the complainant and damaged the car with bats and wickets. As a result, the complainant sustained injuries on his face and forehead," said a senior police officer.
The police have launched a thorough investigation into the incident, with special emphasis on gathering CCTV footage from the area. Local shopkeepers and residents who witnessed the assault have been asked to provide statements to help identify the perpetrators. The damage to his vehicle has been estimated to be costly, including a completely shattered rear windshield and significant dents on the body of the car.
The investigating officers have revealed that preliminary inquiries suggest the accused persons are known troublemakers in the locality. Several of them have previous records of minor altercations and traffic violations. The police are working to establish their exact identities through local intelligence networks.
